Siem Reap – Siem Reap – Angkor Wat is located 314 km northwest of the capital Phnom Penh. The Angkor Wat temple complex represented the apex of Khmer creativity and splendour of the Khmer Empire. It covers 4000 square kilometres. At the center stands of Angkor Wat, the largest and most famous of all the temples and one of the seven wonders of the world. It symbolises the soul, pride and life of the Khmer people. Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century by King Suryarman II who reigned from approximately 1113-1150, took 30 years to complete and is the place where the Khmer kings worship and pray for the protection of their people and kingdom.
Phnom Penh is the capital and largest city of Cambodia, located at the confluence of the Mekong and the Tonle Sap rivers.
For western visitors, Phnom Penh can be a rough change. The city is characterised by warmth and humidity, infrastructure is largely lacking, there are rubbish and dust in the streets, risky traffic, blocked sidewalks, harassment from tuk tuk and moto drivers, touts and beggars - most of which can be dealt with using a smile together with a firm "no" and simply walking away. The Ministry of Land Management still allows many architectural horrors to be built, though a determined group of Khmer architects is fighting the trend.
